there is ""Noise", it used to be a fork removing the hard dependency on
Google Play Services but since Signal 3.30.0 that is not a hard
dependency anymore. Noise doesn’t change a single line of code in
Signal, only the branding."

Sure it´s better (and I always recommend it in the first place) 
to join some jabber/xmpp service, but not all poeple
are ready for this.
